The AI Moderation Debate: Smarter Survey or Something More?
Nov. 19, 2026 at 1pm ET/10am PT

Ask most researchers what AI moderation is good for, and you’ll hear the same answer: qual at quant scale. More interviews, faster, more convenient, and for less. But is that the whole story?
Daniel Gottlieb has spent years making research accessible at scale. He’s excited about what AI moderation makes possible, but wary of what it can cost: findings that sound right but aren’t, participants who push back, and reports nobody acts on. Prayag Narula agrees the stakes are high, but he thinks the conversation about AI moderation has been far too narrow.
Join us on November 19 as two research leaders debate one of the hottest topics in research right now. Expect honest disagreement, real examples from the field, and a sharper sense of where AI moderation belongs in your work.
What you'll discover:
- How to decide when AI moderation should work like a smarter survey and when it should do more
- New ways to use AI moderation in mixed-method research that go beyond “qual at quant scale”
- What checks to run before you trust an AI-moderated finding
- How participants really feel about being interviewed by AI
- Tactics for keeping research centered in product decisions
Whether you’re already using AI moderation or still weighing it, you’ll walk away with a fuller picture of its strengths and limits, and a sharper sense of where it belongs in your work.

Prayag Narula
Prayag Narula is co-founder and CEO of Marvin, an AI-native customer insights platform trusted by Fortune 500 companies to better understand their customers. Marvin brings together AI-powered research tools, an intelligent knowledge repository, and agentic AI to help teams connect with their users, learn faster, and make better decisions together.
Prayag has spent his career at the intersection of research, technology, and entrepreneurship. Before Marvin, he co-founded and led LeadGenius. He previously worked as a researcher at the University of Helsinki, studied at UC Berkeley’s School of Information, and published more than a dozen papers on human-computer interaction, user-centered design, and artificial intelligence.

Daniel Gottlieb, PhD
Daniel Gottlieb is a Principal Design PM at Microsoft CoreAI. He previously built and led Research Operations across Microsoft's Developer Division and CoreAI organizations, developing the systems, infrastructure, and programs that support customer research at scale. Much of his work has focused on breaking down barriers to research, both through new tools and technologies and through education, coaching, and resources that empower researchers, designers, and product managers to learn directly from customers.
Before Microsoft, Daniel's work involved fewer computers and a lot more monkeys. He earned a PhD in Animal Behavior and spent years studying monkeys and managing primate research operations.
